Mitchell's Story

Our Journey Began
It was October 2010, and we were getting Mitchell ready for school when he suddenly turned to me and said, “Mummy, I can’t go to school today because my head is a mess.”
His words took me completely by surprise. I knelt beside him, held him close, and gently reassured him, “It’s alright, son. You can stay at home with me today.” As I stroked his soft head, my heart sank—I had discovered a small, pea-sized lump. A deep sense of unease washed over me. For the past five years, Mitchell had also struggled with constipation, and in that moment, I knew something wasn’t right.
Without hesitation, we set off as a family to our GP surgery, desperately hoping for answers.

Mitchell was initially admitted to our local hospital for tests before being transferred to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, where we received the heartbreaking diagnosis—Mitchell had stage 4 high risk Neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer.
His treatment began swiftly. To combat the aggressive disease and remove the large primary tumor, Mitchell endured intensive rounds of chemotherapy, stem cell rescue, major surgery, and radiotherapy. He then participated in an antibody study. His treatment spanned 18 challenging months, during which he often required blood and platelet transfusions at our local hospital.
Despite his incredible courage and determination, Mitchell progressed disease. On 25th August 2012, at just seven years old, he gained his angel wings. Inspired by his bravery, Mitchell’s Miracles, a children’s cancer charity, was founded on 4th July 2013 to support families facing similar battles, by providing emotional and financial support.
